I remember when Kari Gran launched in 2012 as “the little black dress of eco skin care.” I thought the tagline suited the brand to a tee. The capsule skin care collection included a cleansing oil, toning mist, and serum bearing a minimalist, uber-chic design and on point luxury blends that quickly earned the label cult status.
In keeping with the clean, anhydrous formulas, Kari Gran released the latest addition this summer—the first skincare product in four years—a broad spectrum sunscreen called ‘Three Sixty-Five’ with SPF 28. Spoiler alert: it is outrageous!!
And it can be yours along with mini sizes of the capsule skincare collection in July’s Beauty Heroes box*. The small sizes are ideal for slipping into a travel bag or a purse for on-the-go misting and moisturizing. The total value of this box is $83, and it’s yours for less than $39 with minimum three-month membership of $115. The six month pre-pay of $225 actually saves money, and a 12 month pre-pay is $450 for an additional $18 savings. (I’ve been telling you this box is incredible and it doesn’t fail! #amiright)

As the name suggests, wearing broad spectrum sunscreen is a 365 daily necessity. The sun’s UV rays penetrate glass and can wreak havoc on the skin whether it’s raining or cloudy outside. A case in point: the left side of my face that faces the window in the car is covered in sun spots! I guess I forgot to apply enough sunscreen to that area.
Luckily, the serum-like texture of Three Sixty-Five makes it a breeze. Really! Preventing skin damage from sun exposure never felt this good. The formula massages into skin seamlessly, leaving absolutely no white cast. It is not like a cream or lotion, actually. It feels sheer as can be, likely due to the combination of skin-loving ingredients that maintain the integrity of the acid mantle.
It’s the no-holds-back, stunning collection of oils that makes this happen effectively, including red raspberry seed oil, french plum seed oil (that lends its delicate aroma to the mix too), organic macadamia nut seed oil, kukui seed oil, avocado oil, and jojoba seed oil.
The full ingredients are listed below, and you’ll quickly note that there’s not a single filler among them, solely nutrient-rich, protective skin food, minus the harmful chemicals or environmental hazards found in conventional sunscreens. Sans water means zero preservatives.
Just because it’s lightweight and toxic-free doesn’t mean it isn’t a heavyweight skin defender. Broad spectrum sunscreen means that it creates a physical barrier to harmful UVA and UVB rays, each linked to cancer, premature aging, and skin damage. If it’s hard to remember, Kari Gran offers this neat trick: UVA blocks “Aging” rays, while UVB blocks “Burning” rays. Doesn’t that simplify things for us chemically-challenged? Thanks, Kari Gran for the sweet tip! I may finally keep them straight now.
Why is broad-spectrum sun protection necessary? UVA blocks “aging” rays, while UVB blocks “burning” rays. ⇐Tweet this awesome tip!
What exactly does SPF mean anyway?
Actually, Kari Gran offers lots more tips. The term Ultra Violet (a.k.a. UV rays) isn’t the only one that gets confusing. “SPF” can be a real puzzler too—especially when an SPF 50 tricks beach-goers into a false sense of sun safety and then they suffer nasty sunburns even after applying.
Here’s how Kari Gran explains it:
“The SPF number relates to UVB coverage only. An SPF of 2 blocks about 50% of UVB rays, SPF 15 blocks up to 93% and SPF 30 blocks 97%. How about SPF 50? Only about 1% more—98%. Nothing provides 100% coverage and the higher the number the more likely the product will be greasy (chemical sunscreens) or drying (physical sunscreens). Dermatologists recommend everyone use at least an SPF 15 or higher for most skin types.”
No sunscreen provides 100% coverage so beware of a false sense of safety while outdoors for extended periods. ⇐Tweet this important tip!
An earlier discussion on my blog includes a thoughtful approach to sun protection that factors in dietary supplements and lists some sunscreen favorites chosen by four skin care pros. I am taking those supplements now with visible results. My skin appears smoother and more resilient. (Of course, they had not tried Kari Gran Three Sixty-Five at that time or it would surely have made the cut.)
When to apply and what order?
I think it gets a little confusing as to when and how to apply each product and in what order, so I’ll give you my protocol and an easy way to remember it. Lighter layers go on first!
First, oil cleanse with the Kari Gran Cleansing Oil. Massage into skin to dislodge makeup and dirt, then follow with a warm, not hot, damp cloth. (I usually do a double cleanse in the evenings to remove makeup.)
Mist well with the Hydrating Toner to hydrate the face. Oils seal in moisture, but the lack of water doesn’t add skin-plumping hydration, so toner is absolutely essential.
My rule of thumb when applying treatment products: Lightest/thinnest goes on first because it absorbs fastest and doesn’t block the products to follow but rather prepares skin for the next layer. Usually this is a water or aloe-based hydration serum or lightweight lotion. (FYI: often I use Previse for this layer and until July 15 you can enter the promo code PREVISE at checkout when purchasing Previse Nutrify Tonic and you will receive a Jokipiin Face Wash Cloth (value $24) as a gift with purchase. These Jokipiin cloths are made of organic linen from Finland and, according to Beauty Heroes Founder Jeannie Jarnot, they are amazing, over-sized face and body towels that work well for cleansing and exfoliating. I really want one to use in the first Step!!)
Before I apply any oil serum, I spritz my face again with toner and I take a drop of serum in my palm and mist the toner right into my palm. Then I warm the mix in my hands and pat and press into my skin. Drier skin may want to use more than one pump of serum, but I believe less is more when it comes to oils and, usually, a half pump offers my skin optimum skin glowing effects and benefits.
The last product to apply to face prior to foundation is ALWAYS sunscreen! Other than makeup, it makes sense that the final barrier to the elements will be broad-spectrum sun protection without diluting it with other products. This is followed by makeup.
Here’s one more tip that I LOVE pulled from the Kari Gran website: “For liquid foundation or a tinted SPF, Kari Gran’s little trick is to mix 1 to 2 pumps of Three Sixty Five with a 1/2 scoop of mineral foundation. Mix in the palm of your hand, blend to the desired consistency and apply. This should be enough for your entire face. If you desire more coverage, use 3/4 scoop to 1 to 2 pump of SPF.” Using mineral powder with titanium dioxide in it adds to the sun protection.
Okay! Okay! Stop talking and take me to this incredible offer now!
